Because fair food adds up FAST.

One kid wants mini corn dogs. Another wants something completely different. Then someone sees a funnel cake. Then everyone wants lemonade.

And somehow I end up buying three full-size things they take four bites of and abandon.

With $3 Bucks for a Bite, we can try different foods without committing to a full-size order every single time.

Less wasted food.

More things to try.

And when it’s approximately 147 degrees outside at the fair?

I’m not carrying around everyone’s abandoned food either.

Especially if fair food is half the reason you’re going anyway.

What Is $3 Bucks for a Bite?

It’s exactly what it sounds like.

Participating vendors choose a fair food item and offer a smaller portion for $3 during the promotion.

You’re not necessarily getting their regular full-size menu item for $3.

The whole point is the smaller portion.

Personally, I think that makes it better.

Instead of spending a bunch of money on one giant order, you can walk around and try different things.

For families with kids, that makes a lot of sense.

What Foods Can You Try?

There are quite a few options.

Some of the $3 bites include things like:

Gyros

Tacos

Mini corn dogs

Funnel cake

Lemonade

Mac & cheese

Elephant ears

Ice cream

BBQ sliders

And more.

So you can easily turn this into your own little fair food tour.

Grab something savory.

Find something sweet.

Let the kids pick something they haven’t tried before.

Split a few things.

Then keep walking until somebody spots the next thing they absolutely NEED to have.

If you have kids, you know exactly what I mean.

Why I Love This With Three Kids

My kids do not have the same taste in food.

At all.

One will want one thing.

Another will want something else.

And the third will inevitably decide they want whatever someone else is eating.

That can get expensive at the fair.

It also creates a lot of wasted food.

I hate buying a full-size meal for a kid only for them to decide four bites later that they’re done.

A $3 smaller portion makes that a lot less painful.

They can try something.

If they love it, great.

If they don’t, we didn’t just buy a huge order that I now get to carry around for the next hour.

Let's Also Talk About the August Heat

If you’re new to the Tri-Cities, here's something you should know.

August is hot.

Really hot.

Obviously, my 147-degree comment is a joke, but some Benton Franklin Fair days sure feel like it.

And when it’s that hot outside, my kids don’t necessarily want to sit down and eat a giant meal.

They want to go.

They want to see things.

They want rides.

They want animals.

They want whatever caught their attention 30 seconds ago.

So smaller portions make even more sense to me.

I’d rather grab a few bites here and there than spend the afternoon carrying everyone’s leftovers around the fairgrounds.

Make It a $3 Fair Food Challenge

This could also be fun if you’re going with friends.

Give everyone a budget and see what you can find.

Maybe everybody chooses one $3 item and you share.

Try something you’ve never ordered before.

Compare favorites.

Find the best sweet option.

Find the best savory option.

Let your kids choose something completely ridiculous.

It gives you a reason to walk around and try vendors you might normally skip.

And honestly, trying a bunch of different fair foods sounds more fun to me than committing to one meal anyway.

Is This Good for Picky Eaters?

I think so.

If you have a kid who wants something until you actually buy it for them, this might be your day.

A smaller $3 portion gives them a chance to try something without you buying the whole thing.

Maybe they’ve never had a gyro.

Maybe they want to try mac & cheese from a particular vendor.

Maybe they suddenly decide funnel cake is the most important thing that has ever happened to them.

Fine.

Try it.

If they hate it, at least we’re talking about a smaller portion.

What Else Is Happening Thursday?

If you want to make a full day out of it, Thursday has more happening after $3 Bucks for a Bite ends.

The Horse Heaven Round-Up Rodeo's Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night is scheduled for Thursday evening.

Lee Brice is also scheduled to perform that night.

Those events can have separate ticketing requirements, so check the Benton Franklin Fair's official schedule before you go if you want to add either one to your day.

You could potentially do your $3 food tour during the afternoon, enjoy the fair, then stay for the evening events.

That would be a pretty full fair day.

Parents, Remember Kids' Day Too

If you have younger kids and you’re trying to decide which day to go, also put Wednesday, August 26 on your calendar.

That’s Kids' Day at the Benton Franklin Fair.

So families have two days back-to-back that are worth looking at:

Wednesday, August 26: Kids' Day

Thursday, August 27: $3 Bucks for a Bite from 2 to 6 PM

Which one makes more sense really depends on your kids and what you want to do.

Or go twice.

A Few Things I’d Do Before Taking Kids to the Fair

First, check the weather.

I’m serious.

Tri-Cities heat in August can be brutal, and the temperature absolutely changes how long my family wants to stay outside.

Bring whatever your family normally needs for a hot day.

Think sunscreen, hats and plenty of hydration.

I’d also decide what your kids care about most before you get there.

Do they want rides?

Animals?

Food?

Games?

Are you staying into the evening?

Trying to do every single thing at the fair with little kids can turn into a very long day.

Pick the things that matter to your family.

Everything else is a bonus.

Don't Show Up at 6:30 PM for the $3 Food

This sounds obvious, but it's worth mentioning.

$3 Bucks for a Bite is scheduled from 2 to 6 PM.

If this promotion is one of the main reasons you’re choosing Thursday, give yourself enough time.

I wouldn’t plan to walk through the gates right before 6 PM and expect to make a full $3 food tour happen.

Get there earlier and enjoy it.

Is $3 Bucks for a Bite Worth Going to the Fair on Thursday?

For my family, I think it is.

Three kids wanting three different things can get expensive quickly.

This gives us the opportunity to try smaller portions from different participating vendors without buying a full-size meal every time someone points at something.

That’s what I like about it.

It’s not that everything at the fair suddenly costs $3.

It doesn’t.

It’s that participating vendors are offering select smaller portions for $3 during that four-hour window.

For us, that means less commitment to a full-size order, hopefully less wasted food and more chances to try different things.

I’ll take it.
